Hāngi Report:)

 Prepping the fry bread

Last week our class Nga Here Kahikatea went to Whare Manaaki to prepare our hāngi. Isy, Hayley, Tiana and I decided we would help Matua Joe make fry bread. Making the fry bread was one of the many jobs to prepare the hāngi.

We firstly  started with  getting the fry bread ingredients ready such as flour, baking powder, salt and lukewarm water.  Once we found the ingredients we had to get started with pre-heating the pans and putting the oil in. Then we left it to heat up for the frying time.

Then during  the time the oil was heating up  we got a bowl to put the dry ingredients in. We added one cup of flour at a time to the bowl,  followed by  a half a teaspoon of baking powder. We added 5 cups of flower so that would equal out  to be about two and a half teaspoons of baking powder. After we added the flour we added the lukewarm water. After that we mixed it to a strong consistency. Then we needed it on the table. After that we let it sit.

After we let that sit we rolled the dough out and  then cut it  in into rectangles/square shapes to get it ready to cook. Finally it was time to fry the bread. After  one side fried we flipped it over so the other side could fry. When we finished frying the bread we let it cool down for a bit.  We made about six batches. Then after that we presented about three batches to people that were there for a hui, along with buns, watermelon, biscuits and many more snacks. The fry bread was so delicious!
